A geologist is a scientist who studies how the Earth is out together, its age, and how it works. Because the bit we live on – the crust – is mostly solid we are really interested in how rocks form, what they are made of, and how they change when they are put under stress. Understanding how life started and how it has thrived on, in, and beneath the surface is something that geologists study.
If we look at rocks in the field – at a cliff, or in mountains, or in quarries – we can identify the rock and then we can look for the clues that tell us what conditions were like when it formed. We can also see what rocks are above and below and do the same for them.
Some geologists are interested in rocks, some in past life – fossils, some in working out how the Earth works, some – like me – in the relationship between rocks and water. When your study subject is the Earth there’s a lot to learn!
