I was interested in water and I knew some people who worked with water. I knew I wanted to work on practical issues and work in the broad area of water resource management. I gradually realised that the bit that interested me most was how water behaved underground, in the rock. I did my MSc and worked on some water projects – in the US – and all the time I found this groundwater stuff more and more interesting. Then I worked for a small company and I learned huge amounts about how to find water and how to manage it. We worked for big companies and small companies, farmers and home owners and it was always about working out why water showed up where it did or why not enough or too much would show up
