Scientists discovered this year that the brain and its cells seem to continue working for up to 3-5 minutes after the heart stops beating and pumping blood around the body. This is really cool and was only shown earlier this year, so it is still a really new finding and a lot more work will have to be done to see why the brain keeps working for so long after the heart has stopped beating. This is a link to the newspaper article about the study! https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/human-brain-conscious-heart-stops-beating-death-neurology-research-a8232921.html

Sonia has a great answer here. 🙂

The only thing I could add would be a strange story about a headless chicken named Mike. He was in a situation where he lost most of his head and still stayed alive for months. He still had the base of the brain, which allowed him to live and walk around and stay healthy. So the whole thing goes both ways, the brain can stay going after the heart stops, and the heart can stay going after some of the brain stops.
