There are three rock types: igneous, metamorphic & sedimentary and all of them are in Ireland. The oldest rocks are at Inishtrahull island off Donegal – they’re about 1600 million years old, Belmullet in Mayo is more than 1000 million years old, and some rocks in Killmore Quay in Wexford are probably around that age too. These old rocks are complex and they’ve been heated up, squeezed, stretched, bent and broke but they’re still here. The most common rock type in Ireland is limestone – it makes up more than 40% of the land and it is between 300-400 million years old.

Tiernan did a great job here. All I could add would be a neat map of different rocks in Ireland! They’re neat!
