Great question! This is something scientists are still trying to figure out. Scientists have studied sleep for years and years but we are still not sure why we sleep or dream or have nightmares! Some scientist think that maybe dreams and nightmares are your brain’s way of trying to sort through all the things your brain has taken in during the day. Other scientists think that dreams and nightmares have to do with the way your are feeling and then other scientists think that dreams and nightmares mean nothing and just happening because the neurons in your brain are firing while you are asleep. So as you can see there is still a lot to learn about sleep!
