Question: how do crystals form?
Asked by #faith to Sonia on 9 Nov 2018.

It has to do with liquids that cool and the molecules fit together and become solid! Here is a good website explaining crystallisation and giving some fun facts about crystals! https://www.ducksters.com/science/crystals.php

Sonia has explained it really well.
Crystals (and minerals) form from cooling of really hot materials that are full of dissolved elements (like magma or lava), but crystals and minerals can also form when you get rid of water. If you go to the Mediterranean you will sometimes see what look like shallow swimming pools dug near the sea. These are made by people to get sea salt. They let water from the sea into the lagoons, and then let nature do the rest. The sun heats the water and it starts to evaporate. When that happens anything dissolved in the water falls out (precipitates) forming a solid. In this case the solid is sea salt crystals. People come and collect the crystals, then let more sea water in and the process continues.
